Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)

Fluoroplast – it is a chemically produced material that features chemical resistance to mineral and organic acids, alkalis, organic solvents, oxidising agents, and other aggressive media. Chemical name - PTFE. It is also known as: polytetrafluoroethylene, teflon, ftoroplast.

Fluoroplast is defined as physiologically inert material featuring very good electric and mechanical characteristics, including low porosity. Fluoroplast is mechanically resistant at temperature interval ranging from -190 oC to +250 oC.

Characteristics:

  • Extremely low friction coefficient.
  • Almost no deformation occurrence under the action of temperature.
  • Dielectric characteristics do not alter at interval till 200oC, while chemical ones – till 300 oC.
  • It is a totally hydrophobic material.
  • It is both physiologically and biologically non-hazardous.

Depending on the purpose and conditions of application, fluoroplast may be produced with various additives: coke, molybdene disulfide, glass or carbon fibre, and etc. Additives are employed for improvement of hardness, thermal conductivity, friction resistance, reduction of deformations due to high loads for fluoroplast, including reduction of linear thermal expansion coefficient.

Scope of application:

Production of armature for transportation of chemically active media and for pump parts, gaskets, and sealing elements. Widely used for production of wheeled motor vehicles and various devices, as it increases reliability and durability of mechanisms, including safety when operating in aggressive environment, under vacuum and cryogenic temperatures.

Thermal strength and dielectric characteristics ensure a wide application in electrotechnics and radiotechnics. It is used as insulation material for wires, cables, and terminals. It is used in production of printed circuit boards, including for technique working on high rpms and nuclear energetics.

It is widely used in light, food, medical and pharmacy industries, e. g., for production of dough rolling rolls, anti-adhesive and non-sticking coatings, gaskets for milk pumps, blood vessel prosthesis, heart valves, blood storage vessels, and medicine packages.
