Spiral wound gaskets
A gasket is a mechanical seal used in a device or mechanism between two materials, such as two metals or chemical substances, to prevent the leakage of gases or liquids.
Gaskets are used in almost every industry and are universal, required for nearly every mechanism. Criteria such as temperature, operating pressure, the materials involved (liquids, gases, acids, alkalis, etc.), and the composition of the sealing material are among the most important factors when choosing a gasket from which the seal will be made.
Improperly selected gaskets can lead to failures in the equipment in which they are used. Properly chosen, tailored, and periodically checked (for damage or defects) gaskets contribute significantly to the safe and effective operation of equipment.
Spiral gaskets are high-reliability metallic gaskets with high elasticity properties.
The sealing component of spiral gaskets consists of a stainless steel strip wound and a soft insert. The metal “V” shaped strip provides elasticity to the gasket, while the sealing insert ensures tightness. Due to these properties, SPW gaskets are mechanically resistant and most suitable for high changes in pressure (up to 300 bar) and temperature (up to 550°C).
Due to their properties, they are suitable for use in flanges, pumps, pipes, valves, heat exchangers, and in cryogenic rooms, chemical plants, and research laboratories, where low-temperature storage solutions are utilized. They are also suitable for use in the chemical, petroleum, power generation, metallurgy, and shipbuilding industries.

Construction:
- The sealing component consists of a stainless steel strip wound together with a soft insert.
- The metal “V” shaped strip provides elasticity to the gasket, while the sealing insert ensures tightness.
- Thanks to these two components, spiral wound gaskets are most suitable for high-pressure and temperature changes.
- The outer ring is designed for centring the gasket relative to the flange and protects the gasket from “blowout.”
- The insert is usually made of thermally expanded graphite or fluoropolymer (PTFE).
Depending on the type of flange, spiral wound gaskets can come with or without an inner and centering ring.
Fields of application: heat exchanger manholes, pipeline flanges, pressure vessel flanges, equipment flanges, reactors.
